Dr. James Henderson Receives the 2025 O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award from the American Board of Orthodontics

 

Dr. James HendersonJames Pressly Henderson, Ph. D., of Raleigh, North Carolina, has received the 2025 O.B. Vaughan Special Recognition Award from the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). The award recognizes an individual who has significantly contributed to orthodontic education and furthered the ideals of the ABO.

Dr. Henderson is the Organizer and Senior Psychometrician at Credentialing Examination Consulting, LLC in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he has provided consultation and psychometric services to credentialing organizations, testing companies, and other organizations since 2020. He has also held senior leadership positions as a Psychometrician with Scantron Corporation and Castle Worldwide, Inc., and before that was Assistant Professor in tests and measurements at the State University of New York at Cortland from 1987-1991.  

Dr. Henderson has conducted practice analysis studies and a wide range of other studies that support the fair use of multiple-choice examinations for the American Board of Orthodontics and 53 other state and national medical and professional services boards. He has also developed practical and/or oral certification examinations, including for the ABO.

Dr. Henderson served the National Commission for Certifying Agencies as Psychometrician from 1993-1998 and Chair from1996-1998. He has held numerous national leadership positions at the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, National Commission for Certifying Agencies and the National Skills Standards Board, and has given many professional presentations at the Annual Conference of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and other conferences. He was the editor of the current edition of Certification: The I.C.E. Handbook, which is the primary resource in the field of professional certification.

“I was surprised but very pleased when I learned I was to be given this award,” Dr. Henderson said. “I know several of its previous recipients and something of the careers they have had, and I am honored to be in their company.”

Dr. Henderson received the Dennis Falk Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Institute for Credentialing Excellence in 2019, as well as its Service Award in 2012 and Leadership Award in 2001.

Dr. Henderson received his Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Arts degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His Bachelor of Arts degree is from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida.
